Need Help Choosing a Air (Pneumatic) Torque Screwdriver?

Knowing the difference between the full auto and slip/cushion clutch air screwdrivers is essential when choosing the correct screwdriver for an assembly application. Full auto clutch screwdrivers are ideal for applications requiring precise repeatable torque. These screwdrivers shut off completely once the easy to set torque setting is reached. For applications that do not require precision repeatable torque slip/cushion clutch screwdrivers are an economical alternative. The clutch on these screwdrivers slip once the easy to set torque setting is reached. The operator must release the screwdrivers lever to stop the bit of the screwdriver from slipping.

Air screwdrivers come in three basic designs; inline/straight, pistol and angle grips. Inline/straight screwdrivers are ideal for assembly applications where the operator is fastening screws vertically. These screwdrivers have comfortably ergonomic grips that are ideal for straight up and down fastening. For those applications where the operator is fastening screws in a horizontal direction, pistol screwdrivers are ideal. Pistol screwdrivers allow the operator to maintain a comfortable and ergonomic grip on the screwdriver while fastening in the horizontal plain. Angle screwdrivers are ideal for applications with high torque or applications with limited access.

Fig. 1: SL Series Screwdriver

Lever Start Full Auto Shut Off Clutch (CL and SL series)

The CL and SL series are inline/straight lever start screwdrivers with a full auto shut off clutch. The lever start option allows the operator to engage the screwdriver by applying a slight amount of pressure on the trigger/lever. When the torque setting is reached, the full auto shut off clutch shuts the screwdriver off (the bit completely stops turning at this point). The torque setting is set by adjusting the Stepless Torque Adjuster at the tip of the screwdriver.

The CL series is our newest model, lever start, full auto shut off screwdriver and includes features such as an improved motor, “Top Wave” ergonomic grip, color torque system and much more. The SL series is our economically priced full featured lever start screwdriver. These screwdrivers are ideal for assembly applications that require exact repeatable torque where the operator is fastening screws in the vertical direction. (See Figure 1)

Here are some simple rules when choosing an air torque screwdriver.

  1. Only choose a slip/cushion cultch series screwdriver when you are sure that the fastener being used is made of a material that will not be damaged once the slip/cushion clutch engages.
  2. Choose a full auto clutch screwdriver for assembly applications requiring precise repeatable torque.
  3. Use Inline /straight screwdrivers for assembly applications where the operator is fastening screws vertically.
  4. Use pistol screwdrivers for assembly applications where the operator is fastening screws horizontally.
  5. Use angle screwdrivers for assembly applications with high torques or applications with limited access.
  6. Push to start vs. lever start inline/straight screwdrivers – is an operator's preference. Both screwdrivers types are used for the same assembly jobs.
  7. Air screwdrivers require less maintenance than electric screwdrivers.
