Air flow effects on air screwdrivers

 

Is an air (aka: pneumatic) screwdriver the best choice for you? Factoring in what you’re manufacturing or where you are in a multi-stage assembly, are better served with a pneumatic screwdriver?

Pneumatic tools are the best option for heavy assembly and high-output procedures. Additionally, pneumatic tools are again the best option in harsh environments when electric screwdrivers may not be advisable.

 

When comparing different types of torque screwdrivers here is what you can expect with pneumatic screwdrivers:

 

Torque Range

Rated the highest:

When using compressed air, pneumatic drivers are capable of producing the highest amount or raw power. This makes air screwdrivers the most ideal torque screwdriver for high-torque assembly applications.

 

Torque Control

All classes of torque screwdrivers are classified as having “High” torque control.

Continuous-Drive pneumatic screwdrivers are equipped with high-precision torque control mechanisms. This will prevent over torqueing by cutting off air-flow when torque is reached.

Discontinuous drive or pulse pneumatic screwdrivers are not as accurate.

 

Noise Level –

 

Noise levels vary will vary by compressor. You will experience at least 80 decibels. Even though hearing protection is recommended at 85 decibels always remember SAFETY FIRST and wear protection regardless. If there are multiple compressors working around you, then exceeding 85 decibels is easily achieved.

 

Maintenance –

 

Considered moderate. By sure the air you’re using is clean. Practice routine preventative care. Mid-grade air tools average 200 hours between servicing. High-grade air tools average 2000 hours between servicing. Periodically air tolls may require being rebuilt and regular calibration is required for proper torque control.

 

Ergonomics –

 

This depends in the type of air tool. Higher torque output will have a greater amount of vibration and higher torque reaction. Pneumatic screwdrivers produce higher vibrations and greater torque reactions.

Used properly and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment are your best choices when using pneumatic screwdrivers

When using a quick release on the tool to cut down the volume of air to the driver the clutch does not engage properly causing a large twisting torque to the operators hand. It is very important that if using a quick release to NOT reduce the size of the airline below a ¼ inch. You need to use a high flow quick release.

Inline Air Torque Screwdrivers

AUTO STOP INLINE AIR TORQUE SCREWDRIVER

These Inline Air Screwdrivers have a Full Auto Stop Clutch. They feature an ergonomic design that ensures the operator’s comfort and are noted for low noise, low vibration and high accuracy.

Common usages for this screwdriver are assembly-fastening applications that require precision repeatable torque control.

Inline Air Screwdriver CS Series

The CS-39CS-45CS-48 and CS-58  feature a lever start with a slip (cushion) clutch. The slip/cushion clutch slips once the pre-set torque is achieved. Pistol Grip Air Screwdrivers
