Why use a Torque Meter with Clutch-Type Screwdrivers

When it comes to an assembly application, not only is an accurate and repeatable torque driver paramount, but so is ensuring the proper toque is set.   A torque meter often plays

a crucial role in accurately setting the torque on one of our electric or pneumatic torque screwdrivers.  Each of our drivers features an index of either 8 or 10 “steps” that is engraved on the screwdrivers torque dial.  The torque range that each driver is capable of achieving is then split up evenly among these steps, giving the operator a rough idea of what the torque value is at any given position.  This procedure, however, is unable to provide exact results due to minor variations during the manufacturing process, and only allows for incremental adjustments rather than fine adjustment.  Instead, a torque meter can be used to set torque to guarantee exact and accurate results.

This precise measurement is done using a transducer. A transd

ucer measures changes in pressure or force and converts it into a numerical value with a unit such as In-lbs., Kg-cm, or N-m.  The transducer produces torque values that are accurate to +/-.05% deviation.  The torque meter also has a component called a rundown nut.  The rundown nut is a fixed threaded hole attached to the transducer in which a test nut is screwed into.  Concave and convex washers can be placed in-between to simulate different types of joints.  This allows our torque meters to be versatile, servicing many different applications.

Our torque meters are capable of measuring torque in 3 different ways.  The first is known as track mode.  Track mode tracks and displays torque in a live display in real time.  The second is known as Peak mode.  Peak mode displays the highest torque value achieved throughout the rundown, or the peak value.  This is the most common mode used.  The final mode is Peak-Down mode.  Peak down mode is very similar to peak mode, except it displays the first peak torque value instead of the peak torque value overall seen in a single rundown.
